Rainbow Dace Available

Rainbow Dace

For the first time this season, we have Rainbow Dace available.

live Rainbow Dace fish

Also known as the Red Shiner or Red-horse Minnow, Rainbow Dace are native to central North America west of the Mississippi River.

Maximum size is only about 3.5 inches, but they pack plenty of color to make up for it. With a mix of blue and purple on the sides combined with red fins, these fish are sure to delight.

Dace are winter hardy, and completely compatible with all Koi and Goldfish. For more information and pricing, check out the Rainbow Dace product page or our Price List and Availability.

Hi Casey, is there a date too late to introduce these fish to an outdoor pond (Maryland, Zone 7) for overwintering? We have had a couple of 33/34 degree nights, with a 32 or below night probably within the month.

Hi David,

Dace are winter hardy and can withstand cold temperatures. So, provided that they are acclimate properly, I would not think that you would have a problem adding them to your pond. Good luck!

Do you have to worry about large koi or pleco eating these

Casey LeFever
Dec. 23 - 2013

Pleco, no, they will not eat Rainbow Dace. However large koi will eat them if they are able to get the dace into their mouth.

Winter hardy, but can they survive under ice? Located in northern Wisconsin; Goldfish have been fine.

Sorry, I’m not sure about their ability to survive under ice.

Here’s a good question that i have not found while researching smart guy mr. anonymous. Do these need to breed using clams, or mussels, as do some, or over a rock pile? There seems to be varying opinions on this. How do you accomplish breeding with these?

Thank in advance.
