Also known as the Red Shiner or Red-horse Minnow, Rainbow Dace are native to central North America west of the Mississippi River.

Yes, the Rainbow Dace will eat the same pellet food given to Koi and Goldfish. The smallest pellet size is preferable.

    • Casey November 8, 2013 at 3:45 pm #

No, sorry, there is not much to be done to stop large koi from bullying small Rainbow Dace.

Hi Casey, is there a date too late to introduce these fish to an outdoor pond (Maryland, Zone 7) for overwintering? We have had a couple of 33/34 degree nights, with a 32 or below night probably within the month.

  8. Casey LeFever November 11, 2013 at 2:49 pm #

    Hi David,

Dace are winter hardy and can withstand cold temperatures. So, provided that they are acclimate properly, I would not think that you would have a problem adding them to your pond. Good luck!

Do you have to worry about large koi or pleco eating these

  10. Casey LeFever December 23, 2013 at 1:14 am #

Pleco, no, they will not eat Rainbow Dace. However large koi will eat them if they are able to get the dace into their mouth.

Winter hardy, but can they survive under ice? Located in northern Wisconsin; Goldfish have been fine.

  12. Casey LeFever January 27, 2014 at 1:03 pm #

Sorry, I’m not sure about their ability to survive under ice.

Wow a lot of stupid questions here. Do some research people……. Gosh!!!

  17. Smart question asker May 18, 2014 at 7:35 pm #

Here’s a good question that i have not found while researching smart guy mr. anonymous. Do these need to breed using clams, or mussels, as do some, or over a rock pile? There seems to be varying opinions on this. How do you accomplish breeding with these?

  18. LarryM July 24, 2014 at 2:54 am #

Are Rainbow Dace easy to breed? Can’t seem to find much information on that subject. Can you provide ay links as to where I could find breeding information?
    Thank in advance.

I was thinking about getting some cold water fish and the rainbow dace looked really pretty. What is their approximate price?

  20. chubby guppy August 17, 2015 at 6:51 pm #

The dace might look pretty if you have an underwater window in your pond, but in mine you’re usually looking down on them so they look brown and camouflaged. Still, better than the unnatural dayglow orange of koi.
