 Blue Ridge introduced butterfly Koi to the pond industry many years ago (see The Origin of Butterfly Koi) and we remain the leading butterfly Koi breeder in the US.
Although they are frowned upon by many high end Koi collectors, they're still very popular among pond hobbyists. Producing quality butterfly Koi is a very challenging endeavor, requiring lots of labor and patience.
Compared to the standard-finned varieties, the cull rate is generally higher and the offspring from amazingly beautiful parent stock sometimes results in almost no marketable offspring. When a pairing does result in fish with good color, many are culled out because of mismatched or deformed fins.
